This technique is formally known as yadomejutsu in the ancient writings,
meaning a technique for 'arrow stopping'.
A budding monk early in his or her skills will find that a certain level of
skill in the martial arts enables rather extraordinary abilities. In this case,
a properly disciplined monk is able to heighten their reflexes and level of
alertness outside of their immediate area of influence. The effect of these
increases is to allow the monk a very good chance at dodging, or in some case
even smashing, physical projectiles of various kinds out of the air!
It has been rumored that the ancient monks found a way to apply this to even
magical projectiles.
