The Arch Mage Brax was often at the forefront of the fight to bring down the
more unpleasant creatures of the Realms, and regularly found herself in
situations where the battle turned abruptly against her. In these situations,
she realised, a Warmage is at her weakest for while offensively they are
without peer, defensively they leave much to be desired.

Pondering over how best to deal with such situations, she came up with the idea
of a variation on shroud. Instead of using negative energy to reflect damage,
it would use positive energy to absorb it.

The result was her Shield of Mana - this spell can be cast at any time, and
will immediately surround the mage with a shimmering energy shield. While the
shield holds, the caster is protected against fully two thirds of any damage
she would otherwise have taken. However, the shield is hugely draining to
maintain. For each point of damage protected against the caster will lose 2
magic points. Additionally it can be sustained for no more than 10 seconds
before the strain becomes too much. For these reasons, the Shield of Mana is
best used in emergencies only, when the casters life hangs in the balance.
Since it operates on a diametrically opposed principle to Shroud (positive
energy vs negative energy), only one shield may be active at a time. While
Manashield will not cancel Shroud, it will prevent it from providing any
defence during its uptime. Also, like its negative energy counterpart, Mana
Shield interferes with healing, although not in so serious a way. While healing
will not harm the wearer of the shield, it will instead render the healing
inneffective.
