The Volatile Effect is a reference to how abilities perform as you use them&lt;br /&gt;
over time, in combat and out.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Each ability&amp;#039;s affinity has a say in how it performs vs your current State.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If an ability has an affinity for Chi and your Diposition is positive towards&lt;br /&gt;
Chi, then that counts towards the ability performing with more Volatile power.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
However, if an ability has an affinity for Offensive Posture, but has a&lt;br /&gt;
current State Posture that counts towards Defensive, that will count *against*&lt;br /&gt;
the ability&amp;#039;s Volatile power.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is why a balanced State is considered best for most day-to-day uses.&lt;br /&gt;
All abilities will perform at their normal power without any sudden drop in&lt;br /&gt;
performance.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The exception to the rule, in terms of balance, are the abilities Counter&lt;br /&gt;
and Stance.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Stance is a passive ability that costs nothing, but provides the Monk with&lt;br /&gt;
a constant passive bonus to their Volatile Effect output.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Simply put, if a Monk chooses say a Forward stance, they get a bonus to the&lt;br /&gt;
Volatile power of all abilities with an affinity for the Offensive. None of&lt;br /&gt;
the Defensive attuned abilities will suffer as a result.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The same effect counts towards Counter, except that it is an active ability,&lt;br /&gt;
and as such normal ability rules apply.&lt;br /&gt;
