Alignment in Elephant MUD

Alignment is a measure of how good or evil your character is. Someone who would murder innocents, steal from babies and backstab a friend, is likely to be evil. Where someone who would heal the sick, help old ladies across busy roads and who would also spend their time ridding the lands of the creatures of evil would be good. However, one cannot become more and more Good by killing lots of little evil monsters. To reach the heights of Saintly (and conversely Demonic), one must defeat the most formidable creatues in the Realms. There are more levels of alignment than Good and Evil, these are listed below in order from most good, to most evil.

Saintly Righteous Good Benevolent Nice
                                  Neutral
                                  Mean Malevolent Evil Nefarious Demonic

What alignment you are is important. Deceased Good characters find coming back to life via the aid of a Cleric much cheaper and are more accepted throughout the Realms. However, their strict moral code means they may not attack or harass non-Evil people unless provoked (ie they have 'revenge'). Neutral people have a more flexible view of ethics and thus may harass others (ie perform revengeable acts on them), but are still prevented from attacking anyone who is not Evil. Clerics may bring them back to life (although not as cheaply), and Druids may also be of great benefit to them when deceased. Evil players care nothing for morals and may act as they please at any time - however dying is a very painful thing for an Evil person to do!

In some parts of the Western Realms being Evil is a crime. Such places often employ members of the local clergy to detect evildoers!
