Hunting
Hunting
A Ranger is someone who is completely self sufficient in the wilds, and in
addition to foraging, has the ability to hunt creatures for food. To the
outsider, this may, at first, seem rather a paradox - that someone so
dedicated to the preservation of the wilds and its flora and fauna could
hunt the very animals he defends. However, such people demonstrate a
lack of understanding as to what a Ranger is.
Rangers believe that natural order is the best way to do things, a belief that they share with the Druids, and while it can be hard for an outsider to understand this, life and death, the hunter and the hunted is a vitally important aspect of this natural order. Rather than the Hunt which provides sustenance, it is the needless and mindless destruction of the wilds that the Ranger is opposed to. Within the natural environment, he is no different to the creatures he defends, hunting to survive, taking only what he needs, and playing his part in the wider natural harmony.
The cycle of Life can be hard to understand for those who build walls around themselves to shut nature out, but to a Ranger it is their daily guide.
A Ranger should not hunt animals for pleasure, however, and must be sure to honour his prey, and respect its place in the world. He should kill only what he needs, and not hunt the creatures of the forests for experience. But above all else, a Ranger must not, under ANY circumstances kill an animal of his own clan once he joins one. To do so would carry the most severe penalties.
